Summer in the UK might not rival tropical climates, but when the sun does shine โ€” it can get surprisingly hot for our four-legged friends. Dogs are much more sensitive to heat than humans, and without the ability to sweat like we do, they can easily overheat.

๐Ÿพ 1. Walk During Cooler Hours

Avoid midday heat. Stick to early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are lower and pavements are cooler.

ย

Tip: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If itโ€™s too hot for you, itโ€™s too hot for their paws.

๐Ÿ’ง 2. Keep Water Close By

Always have fresh, cool water available โ€” indoors, outdoors, and during walks. A collapsible water bowl is a great addition to your dog-walking kit.

โ„๏ธ 3. Use Cooling Mats or Towels

Cooling mats are a summer essential. You can also wet a towel with cold water, wring it out, and let your dog lie on it. Never place ice directly on your dogโ€™s skin โ€” it can cause shock.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ 4. Create a Shady Sanctuary

If your dog loves being outside, make sure they have access to shade. Set up a parasol or canopy in the garden and bring them indoors during the hottest hours (typically 11 amโ€“3 pm).

๐Ÿฆ 5. Make Doggy Ice Treats

Freeze low-sodium broth, chopped fruit, or treats in ice cube trays for a cooling snack. You can also stuff a Kong with wet food and freeze it โ€” enrichment and refreshment in one!

๐Ÿšฟ 6. Cool Showers or Mist Sprays

A gentle mist from a spray bottle or a quick cool shower can bring relief. Avoid cold water shocks โ€” always use lukewarm to cool water.

๐ŸงŠ 7. Use a Fan or Cooling Vest

Place a fan where your dog rests or invest in a cooling vest that absorbs and evaporates water to keep body temperature down.

๐Ÿšซ 8. Never Leave Dogs in Cars

Even on mild UK days, car interiors can become deadly within minutes. Even with windows open, cars are a no-go for dogs in warm weather.

๐ŸŽพ 9. Skip Intense Exercise

Reduce strenuous activities like long runs, fetch, or agility training during heatwaves. Instead, offer mental enrichment indoors โ€” puzzle feeders or scent games work wonders.

๐Ÿ  10. Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Act fast if you notice:

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Lethargy or confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Collapse

Move your dog to a cool area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
